Founded in 1901, Lawton, Oklahoma is the seat of Comanche County. The land that the city is on used to belong to the Kiowa, Apache, and Comance Indians. It was named in honor of Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Civil War era. Lawton is highly dependent upon the Army installation, Fort Sill, for its economic well-being.
