Locust Grove is located in Mayes County, Oklahoma. Long before the founding of the town, on July 3, 1862, Federal forces surprised a group of Confederates who were camped in the area, and the ensuing battle became known as the Battle of Locust Grove, for the locust thickets that later gave name to the town. The community's post office was established in 1873, but was not incorporated until 1912.
