Marietta, Oklahoma, the seat of Love County, was incorporated in 1898, but it was settled years before that. The Red River, fifteen miles north of the town, served as a travel route for French and Spanish explorers in the 1700s, and small villages sprang up along its path. Marietta had a post office by 1887.
