Originally settled on the bottom land of the North Canadian River in 1895, settlers were forced to relocate the town because of a flood in the early 1900s. The town was named for John W. McLoud, an attorney for the railroad. The town is centered geographically in the state and nation. Each July, McLoud hosts the Blackberry Festival.
