Located in Johnston County, Milburn was in the Chickasaw Nation after 1855, and a community named Ellen formed about three miles northwest of the present town. When the railroad began plans to come through the area, a townsite initiative emerged, and W.J. Milburn, a local druggist, was chosen to negotiate with the railroad. During that time, Milburnn had several names, including Morris, McLish, Blue, Ellen and Condon, before becoming Milburn in 1902, and incorporated under that name in 1904.
