Situated in northern Johnston County, Mill Creek got its name from the nearby creek and a mill operated by Cyrus Harris, the first governor of the Chicksaw Nation. When its first post office was established in 1852, it was known as Mineral Hill, and was within the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. In 1855, the Chicksaw Nation was created, encompassing Mill Creek. In 1859, the town's name was changed to Harris Mill. Renamed Mill Creek in 1879, the town was incorporated in 1901.
