Mounds, Oklahoma was first known as Twin Mounds, named for the two hills northeast of the current town site. The town moved to a new site, then known as Middle Mounds, to be nearer to the railroad. When the railroad did not build a depot there, the town moved to its current location, renaming the town as Mounds.
