On the day that the land that was to become Oklahoma City was made available for settlement by non-Indians, through the land run of 1889, ten thousand people claimed land there, most living in tents until homes could be built. In 1907, Oklahoma became a state and, although Guthrie had been the capitol of Oklahoma Territory, Oklahoma City was named the state capitol in 1910.
