Okmulgee is a city in Okmulgee County, and the seat of the Muscogee Nation Tribal Complex. Founded in 1868, the town's name was originally spelled Okmulkee, and has served as the capital of the Muscogee (Creek) nation since. Okmulgee means "boiling waters in the Creek language, and was so named for its nearby springs.
