Pawnee, Oklahoma is the seat of Pawnee County. The town was named for the Pawnee tribe, which was relocated from Nebraska to Indian Territory between 1873 and 1875, and settled on a reservation near the current townsite. Its post office was established in 1876, and the area was opened to non-Indian settlement in 1893.
