Named for John Porum Davis, a rancher, Civil War veteran, and Cherokee Nation councilman, the Porum, Oklahoma post office was established in 1890, and the townsite was platted in 1903. In 1905, the communities of Porum Gap and Starvilla were consolidated and incorporated as Porum.
