Sapulpa, Oklahoma is the seat of Creek County. The town is named for Chief James Sapulpa, a Lower Creek from Alabama, ho came to Indian Territory in 1850, establishing a trading post one mile southeast of the current townsite, which was first known as Sapulpa Station. The town was incorporated in 1898, becoming the county seat in 1913, after five years of contested elections and court battles.
