Centrally located within Beckham County, Sayre is the county seat. Situated on the north side of the North Fork of the Red River, the town was incorporated in 1901, and named for Robert H. Sayre, a stockholder in the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. The town was in Roger Mills County until 1907, when southern Roger Mills County and northern Greer County were joined to form Beckham County.
