Located in northern Nowata County in Oklahoma, along the Oklahoma-Kansas state line, South Coffeeville was named for nearby Coffeeville, Kansas, which was named after James A. Coffey, who established the Kansas community in 1869. The community was known as Polson, then Etchen, before it was renamed South Coffeeville when it was incorporated in 1909.
