Stringtown, in Atoka County, Oklahoma, was originally known as Springtown, for the springs that flow out of the hills that the town is built on, and its current name is thought to have been a corruption. The town developed in Indian Territory, and its post office was established in 1874. In 1932, the Barrow Gang shot and killed a deputy sheriff at a dance in Stringtown, which was the first killing of a lawman by the Barrow Gang. Country singer, Reba McEntire, is a native of Stringtown.
