Originally known as Hoyuby, in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, the community grew up around the railroad, and its post office was established in 1892. Because Hoyuby had various spellings, the post office was renamed Stuart, for Judge Charles Bingley Stuart, in 1896. Stuart is in Hughes County, Oklahoma.
