Tahlequah is the seat of Cherokee County, in eastern Oklahoma, about forty miles from the Arkansas state line. Tahlequah was established as the Cherokee capital in 1839, at the close of the Trail of Tears, and is the capital of both the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians and the modern Cherokee Nation.
