Named for a Chickasaw Indian chief who had died on the Trail of Tears in 1838, Tishomingo is the seat of Johnston County, Oklahoma. The town began as a trade center and became the capital city of the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. Its post office was established in 1857, and it remained the capital of the Chickasaw Nation until Oklahoma became a state in 1907.
