Situated along the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River in southwestern Kay County, Tonkawa was established after the land became available for settlement by non-Indians during the Cherokee Outlet Opening in 1893, and named for the Tonkawa tribe. Prior to that time, the area was home to the Nez Perce. Today, the city is the headquarters of the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma.
