Situated nine miles east of the Carter County line, Velma, Oklahoma is in east-central Stephens County. When its post office was established in 1886, the town was named for a local merchant's daughter. The small town incorporated in the mid-1960s. Velma is known for its annual Old Settler's Picnic and Rodeo, which attracts calf ropers from all over the country.
