Walters is the seat of Cotton County, Oklahoma. The town began with the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Opening of 1901, when the federal government set apart a townsite on Cache Creek in the former Comanche Reservation. The settlement was known as McKnight, but that name had already been taken, so residents chose Walter, and a post office was opened in that name. However, in 1917, the name was changed to Walters, as it is today.
