Established in the mid-1890s, Westville is in Adair County, Oklahoma. The town was founded as a stop along the railroad, and named for Jim West, an early settler in the area whose son was an attorney for the Kansas City Southern Railway. At the time of its founding, Westville was in the Going Snake District of the Cherokee Nation and, when Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Westville was named as the seat of Adair County, a distinction that it lost to Stilwell the following year.
