Wewoka is in east-central Seminole County, Oklahoma, although the community was originally in the Seminole Nation, Indian Territory. Gopher John and other Seminole slaves settled there in the late 1840s, living independently of their Seminole owners. In 1866, Elijah J. Brown, a white trader, established a trading post there, which later became the Wewoka Trading Company and, in 1877, Wewoka became the Seminole capitol. Wewoka is also the seat of Seminole County.
