Established as a stage stop between Pendleton, Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington, Athena is a small city in Umatilla County, Oregon. The settlement was known as Mud Flats, Yellow Dog and Squaw Town until the name of Centerville was selected. Because there was already a town by that name in Washington, Athena was selected as its name when the city was incorporated in 1904.
