Located in Marion County, Oregon, Aurora was founded as a religious commune in 1856 by Dr. William Keil, who named the settlement after his daughter. Upon his death, the colonists dissolved their organization and Aurora's businesses and industries became privately owned, many operated by former members of the colony and their descendants. Aurora was incorporated as a city in 1893.
