Bend, Oregon, is the county seat of Deschutes County. Situated in the Cascade Mountains on the banks of the Deschutes River, it began life as a crossing place on the river, and later as a logging town. It was incorporated in 1905. The early pioneers used to call its location on the river the "farewell bend," because it was the last place on the river from which the town could be seen.
