Corvallis is a city located in central western Oregon, and the county seat of Benton County. Situated at the confluence of the Willamette and Marys Rivers, it was founded by Joseph Avery, who opened a store there. It was named using the Latin word for "heart of the valley," in 1853. In 1855, it served as the temporary capital of the Oregon Territory.
