Jacksonville is in Jackson County, Oregon, a few miles west of Medford. The community was named for Jackson Creek, which runs through the city and was the site of one of the first placer gold claims in the region. Jacksonville was founded when gold deposits were discovered there in 1851 in 1852. When the gold deposits were worked out and the railroad bypassed Jacksonville 1884, the city's economy slowed. Jacksonville is located in the southern part of Oregon.
