John Day is a city in Grant County, Oregon, located about one mile north of Canyon City. Incorporated in 1901, the city was named for the nearby John Day River, which was itself named for a Virginian member of the 1811 Astore Expedition. The first homestead known to have been built in Grant County, which was then Wasco County, was 1862, and was within the limits of the current city of John Day. The first post office at what was then called John Day City was built in 1865.
