Located in Wasco County, Oregon, Maupin is the only city located directly on the lower Deschutes River. Maupin is named for Howard Maupin, who came to Oregon around 1863, later operating a ferry on the Deschutes River near the mouth of Bakeoven Creek, which later owned by W.E. Hunt. The settlement was originally known as Hunt's Ferry, which was changed to Maupin Ferry when the town was founded, a name that was shortened to Maupin around 1909.
