The result of a merger of neighboring cities, Milton and Freewater, Milton-Freewater is a city in Umatilla County, Oregon. Freewater was originally named Freeport, which was changed to Milltown, then shortened to Milton. Freewater was named New Walla Walla when it was platted in 1889; its name was changed in respect to an offer of free water extended to new settlers. The city is located just south of Walla Walla, Washington.
