Monmouth is a city in Polk County, Oregon. The community was settled in 1853 by a group of pioneers who allocated 640 acres to build both a city and a Christian college, and proceeds from the sale of these lands were used to found Monmouth University. In 1882, ownership of the college was transferred to the state in the school is now known as Western Oregon University.
