Emigrants traveling the Applegate Trail entered the area in 1846; among them was the Rev. Joseph A. Cornwall and his family, who arrived in 1846, building a cabin and staying the winter there. In 1851, Dr. Dorsey S. Baker established the region's first grist mill and town - Oakland, in Douglas County, Oregon. By the turn of the century, Oakland was the leading turkey shipping center in the United States. Oakland was the first city to be placed on the state's historic register.
