Established in 1829 and incorporated in 1844, Oregon City, Oregon is the seat of Clackamas County and the first United States city west of the Rocky Mountains to be incorporated. Even before the Oregon Trail was established, visitors to the Oregon Territory traveled by ship around the horn of South America, up the Columbia River and the Williamette River, to the water falls at Oregon City. The falls became an early powerhouse for a number of mills in the Oregon Territory.
