The settlement of Prairie City, Oregon has its roots in an 1862 gold strike three and a half miles above the present location of Prairie City, which was called Dixie. As the gold played out, settlers migrated toward the prairie and the fertile John Day River bottom, forming the permanent town that was incorporated as Prairie City in 1891. The city is located along the John Day River, on the north side of a wide prairie that inclines to the base of the Strawberry Mountain Range.
