Salem is the seat of Marion County and the capital of Oregon. Founded in 1842, Salem became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851, and was incorporated in 1857. The city is located in the center of the Williamette Valley, alongside the Williamette River, which forms the boundary between Marion and Polk counties. The neighborhood of West Salem is in Polk County.
