Located along the Nehalem River, on the eastern side of the Northern Oregon Coast Range, in Columbia County, Oregon, Vernonia was incorporated as a city in 1891. First settled in 1874, the community was named for the daughter of one of its founders, which was supposed to have been Vernona. Due to a clerical error, an "i" was inserted in the name, and the city became Vernonia, Oregon.
