The borough of Jim Thorpe, the county seat of Carbon County, Pennsylvania, is nicknamed the "Switzerland of America" because of its mountainous location, charming scenery, and architecture. Founded as Mauch Chunk in 1818 by a coal company, it was home to the first roller coaster in the U.S., called the Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad. After Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe died in 1953, the borough merged with East Mauch Chunk and was renamed in his honor.
