Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in Cambria County, was settled in 1770. It is famous for the "Johnstown floods," three disastrous floods. In 1889 the South Fork dam collapsed, causing the largest one-day loss of civilian life in the U.S. until 9/11/2001. In 1936, another flood occurred due to melting snow coupled by three days of rain, resulting in more than 24 deaths. In 1977, severe storms dumped a foot of rain in some areas, and the resulting overflows of channels and dams, causing 85 deaths.
