Established in 1639, the settlement that is now Coventry was initially part of the town of Warwick but, since it was so far from the center of Warwick, it grew slowly. Enough farmers had settled into the area by 1741 that they petitioned the General Assembly of Rhode Island to create their own town in 1741, a petition that was granted in 1743. General Nathanael Greene, a Coventry resident, became second in command in the Revolutionary Army, after George Washington.
