East Providence is in Providence County, Rhode Island. The Plymouth Colony bought a large trace of land from the Indians in 1641 that includes the northern half of East Providence. Over the next several years, additional portions of land were purchased, including the remainder of the land making up East Providence. The settlement was then known as Old Rehoboth, then Seekonk. In 1862, the settlement was ceded by Massachusetts to Rhode Island and incorporated as East Providence.
