Originally settled in the 17th century by British immigrants, Foster was incorporated with Scituate, Rhode Island in 1730, forming the western part of that township. It remained part of Scituate until 1781 when it split off and became a separate township, named for U.S. Senator Theodore Foster, who had presented the town with a library.
