Named for Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester, the town of Glocester was part of Providence until 1731, when it was incorporated as a separate town, while North Glocester became part of Burrillville. The villages of Chepachet and Harmony are in Glocester. It was in Glocester, Rhode Island that the Dorr Rebellion began in 1841.
