Situated almost entirely on Conanicut Island, in the Narragansett Bay, Jamestown is in Newport County, Rhode Island. Italian navigator, Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew visited the island in 1524. Known as Dutch Island, it was used by fur traders in the early 1600s and in 1638, the English used the island for grazing sheep. In 1678, Conanicut Island was incorporated as the town of Jamestown, named for James, Duke of York.
