Settled in 1638 by a group of religious dissenters from Boston Colony, Portsmouth was named for the Hampshire, England city by the same name. The settlement became part of the Rhode Island Colony, which later became the State of Rhode Island. Most of its land area is situated on Aquidneck Island, which is shared with Middletown and Newport. Other islands within the city limits of Portsmouth include Prudence Island, Patience Island, Hope Island, and Hog Island.
