Warren first served as a trading post of the Plymouth Colony at the Indian village of Sowams, which was located near the part of town now known as Mount Hope Neck, and was incorporated as Sowams in 1668. The settlement was ceded to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 1747, at which time the town was renamed Warren, after the British Admiral Sir Peter Warren. The town is located on the east bank of the Warren River, opposite Barrington, Rhode Island.
