Located in upstate South Carolina, Abbeville is the seat of Abbeville County. The city was settled in 1758 by a group of French Huguenots, and was incorporated in 1832. Abbeville played a key role in the Civil War, and is known as the birthplace and deathbed of the Confederacy, because it was here that Jefferson Davis made some of his most important decisions as president of the Confederacy.
