Alcolu is in Clarendon County, South Carolina. Established as a mill town in the late 1800s, the town's name combines parts of the names D.W. Alerman, the owner of the mill, a Mr. Coldwell, who was a friend of the owner, and Aldeman's daughter, Lulu. Today, Alcolu is a rural community with very little commerce. Its downtown area is said to resemble a ghost town.
