Central is located in the southwestern portion of Pickens County, South Carolina, When the railroad completed the connecting link between the northbound track from Atlanta and the southbound track from Charlotte in 1873, the central location was the logical place for the railroad to build repair shops and fueling stations. The railroad depot was named "Central" and the town built up around it.
