Located in the northwestern part of Lexington County, just above Lake Murray, Chapin was settled in the 1700s by Dutch and German emigrants. Martin Chapin, for whom the town is named, first settled in New York from Germany, later moving south for health reasons in the middle 1800s, establishing a lumber mill.
